HBA Legal taps industry leader for Perth growth

HBA Legal is boosting its ranks in Perth with the addition of a leading medical negligence and professional indemnity lawyer.

Dr Andrew Lu OAM will lead the insurance-specialist law firm’s medical malpractice and health law service in Perth.

Lu is currently managing the Law Society of Western Australia’s professional development arm. He was also a partner and previously led the medical malpractice group at Jarman McKenna, moving from the firm after its merger with Sparke Helmore.

“Andrew’s technical skill is second to none, but the real draw for HBA is the marriage of this with his great enquiring mind and leadership in our profession,” said Brett Ablong, HBA Legal founder and managing director. “HBA is about forging change in how we think about legal services, and how we better solve client problems. That takes a certain aptitude.”

Lu has a rare mix of legal, commercial, and academic experience, he said. The seasoned lawyer is also currently an adjunct senior lecturer at the University of Western Australia’s law school and a medical and health law editor of Halsbury’s Laws of Australia.

“HBA presents an exciting opportunity. It’s a true innovator at this time of fundamental change in the legal profession, and openly fosters a culture of creativity with collegiality,” he said. “It’s a young firm which works for me, and critically, I get to elevate HBA’s medical and health law practice, which is such an important area and requires particular skill, sensitivity, and knowledge.”
