Company: Herbert Smith Freehills
Title: Solicitor
Age: 29

Hilary Starr has played a key role on matters for some of Australia’s biggest companies including the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, BHP, AGL, Qantas, Tabcorp and Elders. She has been recognised for performing well above her level of experience, and given responsibility to manage strategic, ‘high stakes’. Starr has worked closely with clients across a range of practice areas and industries including crisis management, foreign bribery and corruption, major class actions and strategic advice for energy and resource companies. In late 2018, when the Sydney disputes group conducted a review into engagement and wellbeing, Starr was selected to take lead on the project which has led to more tangible initiatives including a coaching and mentoring panel, mental health champions project and a culture committee. A year later, she was selected to participate in a working group across disputes Australia to develop ‘best practice’ guidelines for the firm’s approach to document production. On the pro bono front, Starr completed a secondment in early 2019 at the Shopfront Youth Legal Centre, a free criminal law service for homeless and disadvantaged young people, and now has an ongoing role managing the Shopfront Solicitor Advocacy Scheme.
